Egg Donation Process in Canada: What to Expect

At Indian Egg Donors, we guide intended parents through every step of the egg donation journey in Canada—ensuring it is smooth, transparent, and legally compliant. Unlike many countries, egg donation in Canada is altruistic, meaning donors are not paid but can be reimbursed for reasonable expenses. Here is how the process typically unfolds:

Largest Database of Indian and South Asian Egg Donors

We maintain a secure and comprehensive egg donor database with over 1,000 pre-screened profiles, including:

The first step is to connect with a trusted fertility clinic in Canada. During your consultation, the medical team will review your health history, run preliminary tests, and walk you through the egg donation process in detail. You will also complete a medical questionnaire and submit recent test results—such as bloodwork and a pelvic ultrasound (both no older than 12 months).

We make it easy to choose your ideal donor through our secure online database. You can filter donors by ethnicity, physical traits (like eye or hair color), education level, and medical background. Each profile includes detailed personal information along with childhood and adult photos—helping you make a truly informed choice.

Frozen vs. Fresh Eggs:
Due to Canadian laws restricting compensation, frozen egg donations are more commonly used. We collaborate with top egg banks and clinics to give you access to high-quality, pre-screened frozen donor eggs. However, if you prefer a fresh cycle, we can also assist with coordinating one in compliance with Canadian regulations.

The Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA) regulates egg donation in Canada. The law ensures that all donations are altruistic, and that egg donors receive only expense reimbursements for things like travel and medical costs. All legal arrangements are handled professionally to protect both the donor and the intended parents.

We maintain a secure and comprehensive egg donor database with over 1,000 pre-screened profiles, including:

All donors undergo a complete medical and psychological evaluation. This includes:

  • Infectious disease testing (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis)
  • Hormonal and genetic screening
  • Psychological assessment
  • A review of personal and family medical history

For fresh donations, the donor’s menstrual cycle is synchronized with the intended mother’s to ensure optimal timing. For frozen eggs, your fertility clinic will synchronize your cycle to the embryo transfer schedule.

After fertilization, the embryos are closely monitored in the lab. The best-quality embryo(s) are selected for transfer into the intended mother’s uterus. Any extra embryos may be frozen for future attempts.

About 10–14 days after the transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted. If successful, the mother begins a hormone regimen to support early pregnancy until the placenta takes over. Follow-up blood tests and ultrasounds will monitor the health of the pregnancy.

Cost of Egg Donation in Canada

In Canada, egg donation is considered altruistic under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA), which means donors cannot be paid for their eggs in the traditional commercial sense. However, they can be reimbursed for eligible expenses related to the donation process. Typically, this reimbursement ranges from CAD $5,000 to $10,000, depending on several influencing factors.

What Determines the Reimbursement Amount?

While the reimbursement is not classified as “compensation,” the total amount often varies based on the following criteria:

Legal and Ethical Framework

It is important to note that all reimbursements in Canada must comply with Health Canada’s guidelines. Donors are required to submit receipts and documentation for reimbursable expenses, which can include:

At Indian Egg Donors, we ensure that all financial processes are fully transparent and legal, in accordance with Canadian law. We work closely with fertility clinics and legal advisors to guide both donors and intended parents through the financial aspects of the egg donation journey.
